Premier Group is hosting an Open day and Evening on Wednesday the 12TH of August from 12.00 – 7.00pm in our offices: Level 4, 6 Lapps Quay Cork City Centre
We currently have a variety of vacancies for bi-lingual and multi-lingual candidates. If you speak one or more of the following languages and have a minimum of 1 years experience in the below areas, we would love to meet you on Wednesday 12th. Has the recession affected the IT market?

Recession, Recession, Recession… Has the IT market Boomed, Crashed or stayed Consistent throughout the last 12 months in Ireland?
Two of the most common questions we are asked at the moment is “How do you feel the recession has affected IT? Are there more IT candidates looking for work now compared with this time last year?”
We decided to publish our statistics based on the Verkom website and the volume of candidates who have sent in their CVs to us from July 2008 to July 2009. This may help answer some of the common questions being asked. 
Firstly, you will be interested to know that within the last 12 months there has been a consistent amount of applications coming through our Verkom website. Typically during the middle of December applications slow down and early in the New Year we tend to see more applications year on year which was the same for early 2009.
What does this mean?
This means that, unlike other industries, the level of IT professionals applying for work has not dramatically increased during this downturn
However, the amount of IT jobs available has decreased between 30 – 35% compared with this time last year. We have seen that this decrease has mostly been in senior-end IT jobs like Project Management, Program Management, IT Management and senior Business Analysis. As a result, senior-end candidates have reduced their salary expectations both in the permanent and contracting market.
Other areas of IT have remained stable. The area of IT Development has remained consistent and skilled developers can command similar salaries to this time last year.
Overall, the IT market has not been hit as hard as other industries like construction and electronic manufacturing so be glad you’re working in IT! The good news is that there are still opportunities out there and companies are still hiring.

Rate of decline in job volumes levels off during first half of 2009 During June 09, there were 72% fewer new Irish professional job vacancies compared with the same month the previous year (June 08) as the lack of visibility within the employment market and the economy continued to slow recruitment activity. Figures from the third Premier Group Irish Employment Monitor also showed an 11% fall in new roles versus May 09, ending three consecutive months of minor growth. However, when comparing new job figures for the first half of 2009 to the latter half of 2008, there has been a definite levelling off in the rate of decline. There was a 6% increase in the number of Irish professionals who began their search for a new role during June 09 compared with May 09, amid more redundancy announcements and a tighter jobs market. However, there were still 47% fewer new jobseekers than there were during the same month the previous year (June 08). Brian Murphy, Managing Director of Premier Group in Ireland comments: “The Irish professional jobs market deteriorated further during June 09 as many organisations continued to put their recruitment plans on hold as they try to gain more visibility on the health of the Irish economy. While it’s certainly disappointing to see three months of mild growth come to an end, the general jobs trend for the first half of 2009 is slightly more positive; the rate of decline within the professional jobs market has effectively levelled off. During the second half of last year, the Irish market experienced a huge decline in new job numbers however, during the first half of this year, despite remaining at extremely suppressed levels, they have stayed relatively steady from month to month. “At present, it’s evident that jobseekers in Ireland are facing one of the toughest periods for employment in many years. The recruitment market is so delicate that it’s impossible to make any solid forecasts other than that the next few months are unlikely to get any easier. We’re entering the typically slow summer season, which is likely to prompt more volatility to the flow of new jobs coming onto the market.” Chart: New jobs v. new candidates
